How to Protect Yourself from Bloodborne Pathogens

You may think by not working in health care you aren’t at risk for exposure to Hepatitis and HIV, and many days this may be true. What happens if your coworker cuts their hand open with a box cutter? If you are compelled to help them control the bleeding, or even help clean up the mess left behind you are putting yourself at risk to being exposed to bloodborne pathogens.  Accidents happen all the time, and you never know when you will be compelled to help a peer.

While you may want to come to the aid of a co-worker during an emergency, protecting yourself needs to be your first instinct. Remembering to follow some simple safety procedures will allow you to avoid becoming a victim, while being helpful in an emergency.

Three of our Advantage courses on Bloodborne pathogens are now available in our Video On Demand format. “Bloodborne Pathogens Training for Employees,” “Bloodborne Pathogens: Always Protect Yourself,” and “Bloodborne Pathogens: Control Your Exposure” have all been converted to Video On Demand. Present these online videos in your training classroom to teach employees about Universal Precautions and other safety tips to prevent exposure.
